Benjamart Funan, deputy chief administrator, said that the activity was aimed at mothers and children, encouraging family members to work together and improve their daily lives by learning to conserve the natural resources around them.

The group planted about 300 ceriops or “prong” trees to honor HM Queen Sirikit on her Aug. 12 birthday.

Pairoj said Thailand has environmental problems mainly caused by pollution and the erection of buildings and other industrial sites. The rapid growth of the economy has affected the environment and there are no back-up plans as to how to maintain the green areas in the concrete jungles.

Therefore it is important that local communities join hands and help plant more trees as well as raise awareness to conserve and protect nature, he said.
