Winter’s blustery winds mean big business for Pattaya’s kite vendors who are doing good trade introducing kites to Thais and enticing tourists to bring the hand-made flyers back home.
The sky near the railroad tracks on Soi Siam Country Club was filled with star-shaped “Chula” and diamond-shaped “Pakpao” kites Dec. 19.
Vendor Saiyan Khanungthung, 55, said strong winds during December and January always blow good fortune her way. Not only are buyers from the local community, but overseas tourists who can buy 1-2 m. kites for 70 baht and 2-3 m. kites for 260 baht.

The Chula kites, she said, are the best sellers.
Saiyan invited those who haven’t flown a kite in a long time, or ever, to try it, but reminded potential flyers to give them plenty of space and away from electrical lines.
