Extremely low tides gave surprised Sattahip residents a peek at a previously hidden boat graveyard off the coast.
Low tide at Sattahip Beach near Abhakorn Kiatiwong Hospital exposed nearly a square kilometer of seabed June 22, a phenomenon locals said they could not recall before.
Wrecked ships and smaller boats that sank over the years were exposed as well. The ship graveyard has since become home to fish, coral and sea plants, all of which were stranded by the tide.
The boat graveyard had a flag marking its location. While many thought it was just a dumping ground for disused vessels, it is actually looked after by the Royal Thai Navy and the area is surrounded by seaweed and healthy coral. That makes it perfect for breeding fish and marine life.
