Pattaya’s mayor met with counterparts from neighboring sub-districts to brainstorm solutions to the city’s chronic flooding problem.
Sonthaya Kunplome said involvement from surrounding municipalities is essential, as storm runoff flows downhill from there into the city.
Another part of the problem is encroachment on the Naklua, Suapaew, Nong Yai, South Pattaya and Kratinglai canals, and a lack of maintenance of those waterways, which limits the amount of water they can handle. Small storm-drainage pipelines and overdevelopment also are factors, he said.
Sonthaya said Pattaya has an operational plan to solve the flooding problem divided into short-, medium- and long-term solutions. But it needs help to make that water-management plan a success.
