A quick-thinking driver averted a serious incident that could have severely injured himself and his mother when the car he was driving along Motorway No. 7 suddenly stalled and burst into flames.
The Oct 17 accident occurred on Motorway No. 7 at 1.30 p.m.
As Chonmaphum Sanpho, 33, was driving home with his mother, all of a sudden the Toyota Camry coughed and sputtered and clonked out in the middle of the road.
Smoke wafted out of the engine compartment and the young man sensed that something was seriously wrong.
He ran around to the passenger side, opened the door and pulled his mother out of the vehicle and together they ran as far away from the car as they possibly could.
A few moments later, the engine compartment burst into flames and in the blink of an eye, the red-hot gaseous flames engulfed the whole car sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky.
Highway police blocked traffic from getting too close as firefighters fought to put out the blaze.
Shaking his head in disbelief but with a sense of relief that he and his mother had narrowly escaped death, Chonmaphum looked at the charred remains of his beloved Camry, saying that his car ran on both gasoline and ‘gas’, but when the explosion occurred it was running on gasoline.
With the car looking like it had been hit by a projectile in a war zone, there was no chance for the owner or police forensics to determine what caused the inferno and will most probably be reported as an unfortunate accident.
