About 500 people formed a line more than 100 meters long Oct. 21 to receive the free shirts from the New Friend Shop near Banglamung Hospital. Some had lined up before 8 a.m. for the 9 a.m. shop opening and the supply was gone in 30 minutes.

Owner Sinchai Sukwilai said the idea to offer free black shirts came after seeing the prices for black clothing skyrocket and supplies dwindle following the Oct. 13 death of the beloved monarch. Not everyone can afford new clothes, he said, so he printed 1,000 coupons for people to receive one free shirt each.

He said many more people than expected turned up to get the free clothing, so he is planning another merit-making activity for the near future.
