Neighbors and police came to the aid of an impoverished couple whose shack burned down in the South Pattaya woods.

Wirat Joyjinda, president of the Soi Khopai Community, Pol. Lt. Col. Saranyapong Maithongkultorn and volunteers from the “Water Drops Become a River” group joined June 13 to build a temporary shelter for Sompong Thathom, 56, and his wife.

The group, joined by neighbors near the wooded area behind the Palladium football field on Soi Khopai 10, also donated cash, rice, dried food, drinking water and basic necessities.

Sompong, whose shack burned to the ground two days earlier, admitted he had left something cooking on the stove before leaving home. He and his wife, who pick through garbage for recyclables for a living, lost everything.

The Soi Khopai Community learned of the couple’s distress and solicited donations from neighbors. However, the couple still has more needs. Anyone wanting to assist can call Wirat at 087-744-3647 or the Pattaya Mail office at 038-411-240-1.
