The National Health Security Office hopes to make Thailand’s national health-insurance system a model for Southeast Asia under an agreement signed in Pattaya with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

The two organizations signed the pact Jan. 31 at the Royal Cliff Grand Hotel. Under the agreement, the United Kingdom university will collaborate on research, assist with developing academic policies, exchange information between experts on health insurance, share information on techniques, and organize seminars.

The partnership sprung from the NHSO’s desire to build a network with other developing nations, especially in Southeast Asia.

“We need to learn and team up with other countries to improve our healthcare program so it is accepted by the international community,” said NHSO Secretary-General Dr. Winai Sawasdivorn.

London school Director Peter Piot said the agreement will facilitate collaborative mechanisms between international experts and information exchange.
