Noisy geese supplant watchdogs in East Pattaya

A pair of well-trained geese are amusing residents of an East Pattaya neighborhood with their ability to understand English-language commands and act as “watchbirds.”

Tong and Dee, both six months old, are the “children” of 56-year-old Janthira Moss and her foreign husband in Thunyawan Village on Soi Nernplabwan. Concerned about area burglaries, Janthira got the noisy birds instead of dogs to keep an eye out for strangers on her property.

While raising the birds, the couple used English, instead of Thai, to command them. Neighbors were amazed at the birds’ ability to understand more English than many of them.

Janthira can often be seen walking the two geese on leashes around the community and the birds even join the couple for a “dance routine” in public exercise classes.

The geese also have proved protective of their “parents,” pecking at the legs of anyone who gets near them until the birds are restrained.

Despite that behavior, however, Janthira and her husband plan to keep the birds around permanently.
