Mayor Mai Chaiyanit presided over the April 24 ceremony, which marks the establishment of the Nongprue Sanitation District in 1897.
Nongprue gained a modicum of self-governance after the Siamese Revolution in 1932 when the sanitation district became a municipality. Its legal structure was modified numerous times since by amendments to the Municipal Act in 1959, 1997, 1999 and 2000. The sanitation district designated was eliminated in 1999.
The now-revoked 1997 Thai constitution was the first to declare the need for decentralization of government, a principal that was carried over in the 2007 constitution, but has been watered down in referendum-approved 2016 draft and amended 2017 constitutions, with local officials having their authorities diminished and more power centralized in the Ministry of Interior.
