Nongprue brought National Seniors Month to a close with a health fair for the elderly.
Sub-district official Suwat Chatawattanakulrong opened the April 26 event at the municipal building with government officials, community leaders and soldiers attending.
The fair opened with speeches praising senior citizens and the reading of the “white cheesewood” poem. There also were lectures on seniors’ rights, health screenings, massage, exercise classes and free food for the elderly.
April 27 is Seniors Day in Thailand, but the government designated the entire month of April as a time for activities to show gratitude to elders.
The white cheesewood tree was named the symbol for the elderly, due to its good scent, strong petals and stamina.
Nongprue long ago formed the White Cheesewood Club to hold activities for seniors, including physical, mental, emotional and cultural events. There are now more than 700 members.
