Nongprue has begun laying the foundation for a volunteer network to protect children from violence and exploitation.

Mayor Mai Chaiyanit chaired the volunteer-training session for volunteers at the Diana Garden Resort Pattaya June 30.

Sub-district clerk Teeravith Thongnok said the workshop had two goals. The first was to create and support operating networks working for youths to cover all 44 Pattaya-area communities to help, observe, prevent and support various demands of children.

The second was to be able to cooperate for immediate help and cover as much as possible by having Jiraphat Junnawat, head of the Office of Child Protection at the Church of Christ in Thailand to lecture about violence and dangers affecting children.

Attending were community leaders, teachers, charities, volunteers and police.

Nongprue officials said the government has a responsibility to determine who needs help and motivate the private sector in aiding the poor and at-risk.
