Pattaya has begun demolishing a three-story hotel parking garage at the Bali Hai Bay Hotel after finding it encroached on public land.
City Legal Department chief Sretapol Boonsawat led Pattaya engineers and contractors from Boy Ocean Star Co. to the site July 2 with heavy machinery to start tearing down the illegal structure. The demolition is expected to take 120 days.
The hotel was warned and told to take down its carpark, but ignored legal notices, leaving the city no choice but to do the job itself and bill the hotel, Sretapol said.
But the hotel’s woes are not over: Pattaya next wants buildings at the rear of the resort that contain a swimming pool demolished, saying they too sit on public land.
Pattaya has worked for years to clear South Pattaya’s canal area of structures both obstructing the waterway and encroaching on public land, adding to the city’s flooding woes during the rainy season.
