Pattaya celebrates Prince of Chumphon’s 127th birthday

Pattaya officials and residents celebrated the 132nd birthday of HRH Abhakara Kiartivongse, the prince of Chumphon considered the father of the Royal Thai Navy.

Rear Adm. Wiroj Thunvarukkit, director-general of the Naval Communications & Information Technology Department, led the Dec. 19 commemoration at Pratamnak Hill Station 5 with Pattaya City Councilman Banjong Banthoonprayuk attending.

Religious ceremonies were performed by area monks. Afterward, students from Pattaya School No. 7 performed traditional Thai dances while the Anothai group put on a Thai martial arts show.

HRH the Prince studied naval warfare in England and returned to Siam in the age of King Rama V to serve in the Royal Siamese Navy and contribute significantly to the advancement and modernization of the service.

In addition to his career in the navy, HRH the Prince studied medicine and was particularly interested in the use of herbal medicine in treating his patients. As “Doctor Phon,” he provided medical treatment to people of all classes and races.
