Anticipating the large storms that hit Thailand at the end of March, Mayor Anan Charoenchasri ordered Pattaya’s Sanitation Department to make a pre-emptive strike on the city’s sewers and canals to ensure better flood drainage.
Sompop Wandee, director of water quality management, led a team of workers with a backhoe to dredge weeds and garbage from Naklua’s Nokyang canal March 26, from Pattaya Technical Collage to Sukhumvit Soi 23. Following the work, the canal was as deep as three meters in places.
Anan said that with regular work throughout the summer, Pattaya will still flood, but drainage should be quick.
