Pattaya City officials speak to a homeless man to determine whether he is a Thai national or an illegal immigrant before taking him to the Chonburi shelter for the destitute.

City welfare and security officers joined provincial social workers in rounding up homeless people living on Pattaya’s streets.

Pattaya Deputy Mayor Wutisak Rermkitkarn on July 20 dispatched a team of Social Development and Welfare Department and municipal police to work with the Chonburi Protection Center for the Destitute, anti-human trafficking police and immigration officers to pick up homeless people and beggars on Pattaya Beach, Third Road and other locations.

All those taken into custody will be processed to determine if they are migrants in the country illegally or, if Thai, sent to live at the Chonburi shelter.

Pattaya also will continue to run assistance desks every other Thursday at Mike Shopping Mall to provide assistance to the homeless.

The homeless, tramps and destitute can be found loitering around Pattaya and Jomtien beaches.

Pattaya City has started a campaign to warn the citizens and tourists to “Stop giving money to beggars”.
