Pattaya’s hotels are ready to welcome foreign tourists, but the only thing preventing them from doing so Oct. 1 is the lack of coronavirus vaccines.
Chonburi Gov. Pakarathorn Thienchai said Sept. 7 that there have been meetings with hotel operators about the “Pattaya Move On” plan to reopen the city.
All hotels confirmed that they are ready to welcome tourists. However, they questioned the Move On plan’s requirement that tourists only visit attractions on “sealed routes” as they are difficult to design.
Pattaya Mayor Sonthaya Kunplome said the Move On plan is complete and awaiting official approval. But Pakarathorn said the holdup is getting 70 percent of Pattaya’s adult population vaccinated against Covid-19.
The government has failed to allocate a sufficient number of vaccines to Pattaya, forcing the city to purchase 100,000 of its own doses of a Chinese-made vaccine.
Yet only about 40 percent of the population is vaccinated and officials don’t expect to reach the 70 percent mark until the end of October.
