Pattaya police stepped up patrols of ATM booths, convenience stores, gas stations, banks and gold shops following a teller machine heist that netted thieves 2 million baht.

Superintendent Supachai Puikaewkam dispatched officers for their high-profile patrols May 1 following orders from Chonburi Provincial Police officials.

The orders came after thieves used a blowtorch to steal 2 million baht from an ATM in Nongprue on April 29.

Chonburi Maj. Gen. Khatcha Thatsart ordered 24-hour patrols at high-risk locations. For Pattaya, he specifically suggested business owners should install closed-circuit television cameras and maintain them in working order. Ironically, more than 80 percent of Pattaya’s city-owned cameras are now out of service.
