Pattaya officials are again promising to clean up the chaotic parking situation on South Road following embarrassing posts on social media.

A video clip posted to Facebook showed a drive along the busy thoroughfare where more than half the road was taken up with disorganized food carts and double-parked vehicles.

Parking on South Road long has been a problem, and has caused traffic problems there for several years.

Comments blasted the vendors and motorists for selfishness and city officials for failing to bring order to the street near Chaimongkol Temple.

Chonburi Deputy Gov. Chawalit Saeng-Uthai acknowledged complaints have been received about the disorganized mess and said authorities are working on a fix.

Parking on South Road long has been a problem and the city several years ago introduced alternate-side parking to free up each side of the road on odd and even dates. However, like so many city hall initiatives, enforcement was dropped after the press conference ended and media left.

The city also had vowed to close down the Wat Chai Market, but that too went for naught.
Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh said the city previously set up a committee and allowed 300 vendors to do business in the area from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

However, vendors now are simply ignoring the hourly restrictions with impunity from anyone in charge.

He said the committee will meet again to discuss what to do.
