Social workers meet to improve laborers’ lives

Eighty social workers met in Nongprue to focus on ways to improve the quality of life for low-paid laborers.

Pathama Chanchiew, director of the Social Security Department in the sub-district, presided over the Jan. 4 meeting with social workers from the Labor Security Center Region 2.

The main focus of the project was to improve the quality of life for laborers, both Thai and migrants, who reside in rough conditions, such as makeshift shacks at construction sites.

The social workers were told they have a duty to treat all labor workers equally, make sure they are secure, healthy and make sure that they are not taken advantage of.

Volunteers and social workers from the Labor Security Center Region 2 (Chonburi) take part in the Nongprue Labor Development’s project to focus on ways to improve the quality of life for low-paid laborers.

The project also was aimed at contractors to raise awareness that the well-being of laborers is vital to their business. Companies were told to register all migrant workers properly in accordance with government policy so they get benefits and proper health insurance.

The Social Security Department is also encouraging employers to hire disabled workers who are specialized in particular fields, operations or subjects.

Currently, technology has improved and disabled people are able to work for large companies on computers and other technical machinery, lecturers said.
