STOU opens university-education center in Chonburi Prison

Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University will help Chonburi Prison inmates gain an education with the opening of its latest Special Education Center.

Thailand Corrections Department Deputy Director Somak Rangseeyopas and Sukhothai Managing Director Chailert Pichitpornchai announced the STOU center June 11 as part of the university’s latest expansion. Another center was also opened in Nakhon Sawan Prison.

Chailert said STOU began working with the Corrections Department in 1985, opening 12 prison educational centers before 2012. Each center offers courses, teaching materials and books.

Since 1987, 1,859 prison inmates have earned bachelor’s degrees in law, management, agriculture, political science, communication arts, art, science & technology, human-environment sciences and education.
