A British man and the Thai he allegedly attacked with a knife are both recovering from stab wounds after a drunken melee in South Pattaya.

Police arrived Nov. 15 outside the Welcome Plaza Hotel to find Sermsak Phumkong, 37, bleeding from the wrist and chest; and a British man, John Harris, 45, bleeding from a head wound and numerous other cuts. Both men were taken to Pattaya Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Sermsak claimed he was just sitting there, minding his own business when the drunk farang stabbed him. We’ll let the reader draw his own conclusions. Sermsak told police he was minding his own business at a taxi stand at the Second Road end of Pattayaland when he saw Harris stumbling down the road, apparently drunk, with a knife in hand.

For no reason, the Thai claimed, Harris attacked him, slashing his arm and puncturing his chest. Unable to fight back himself, a crowd of nearby motorcycle taxi drivers and other Thai men jumped the Brit, knifing and beating him into submission.

Police were waiting for doctors to complete treatment, and for Harris to sober up, before questioning the combatants further.
