11 more people – including a deputy commander of Chonburi Police – have been arrested in connection with last month’s reign of terror by loans sharks at a Jomtien Beach pool villa.
Deputy national police chief Pol. Gen. Surachet Hakpan announced the arrest of 10 criminal suspects, the unnamed police commander and five of the victims at the unidentified resort where gangsters shot out the wheels of three cars and pistol-whipped five people Oct. 17.
None of those arrested were identified. Pol. Gen. Surachet said six were perpetrators; two were people who falsely claimed responsibility for the crime to help the real culprits escape justice, and two people who hired the impersonators.
Surachet also said the five injured victims of the crime spree were charged with use of illegal drugs and were being investigated for illegal gambling.
Finally, there was the deputy chief of Chonburi police, who allegedly solicited a million-baht bribe to drop or lessen charges against the suspects. He was charged with corruption, solicitation of bribery and illegally reducing criminal charges.
The commander was suspended and will be fired if found guilty of the charges.
