The Tourism Council of Thailand has begun distributing signs in Chinese and English in hopes of controlling the often unruly behavior of mainland visitors.
Thanet Supornsahatrangsi, vice chairman of the council’s eastern region, unveiled the 100-by-50-centimeter dual-language signs at a news conference July 4.
They ask tourists to understand and respect the culture and tradition of Thailand, and indicate what to do and what not to do in various places.
Among those asked to display the signs were Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, the Sanctuary of Truth, temples, historical sites, the Pattaya Floating Market, Khao Chi Chan, and the Sriracha Tiger Zoo.
They also were distributed to shopping malls, duty-free stores and hotels.
Chinese tourists have been excoriated in the Thai media over the past two years for all sorts of perceived affronts to Thai culture, from washing their feet in restroom hand sinks to defecating on the grounds of temples.
