An underpowered pump is being blamed for dead fish that have polluted a pond at a Nongprue park.

Members of the Health Lovers Club, who patronize Father’s Garden Park, complained Oct. 11 that the small lake there is contaminated, causing the fish within to die.

The said the rotting fish give off a foul odor and rubbish lines the bank of the pond.

Nongprue Mayor Mai Chaiyanit said an investigation found that the pump and oxygenator employed at the pond is insufficient to churn all the water. The pond, he said, was deeper than estimated and the equipment installed can only stir up and oxygenate water near the surface.

As a result, he said, fish have died. As for the rubbish, he said sub-district workers would be sent to clean it up.

The local government is seeking money from next year’s budget to upgrade the equipment, Mai said. In the interim, public health workers will spread disinfectant around the area to cut the smell and will regularly clean the area to improve water quality.
