The arrival of winter-like weather is heating up the market for heavy coats.

“I’ve been living in Pattaya for more than ten years and I have never felt Pattaya as cold as it is now,” said Weerut Bhutrat, a 39-year-old coat vendor at Klong Tom Market near Jamlong. “It has also been cold a lot longer than previous years. Usually the chilly weather would last for a week, but this year is quite different.”

As a result, he said business has been brisk, possibly because he’s charging only slightly over the wholesale cost. Most coats run 280-500 baht.

Weerut said he hasn’t raised prices from last year, which also might be a reason for his success.

Vendors at Grand Hall Market in South Pattaya, by comparison, said sales are not as good as last year, with some vendors complaining people don’t want to pay their prices.
