Photojournalists’ group president dies

Journalists are mourning the death of the president of the Mass Media Photographers Association of Thailand, Vichai Walapol, who died of liver cancer at age 63.

Elected to head the group in April, Vichai was mourned at funeral services Aug. 7 at Wat Phra Si Mahathut Wora Malha Wiharn in Bangkok. Staff members from the Pattaya Mail were among the writers, editors and photographers in attendance.

Vichai was born March 12, 1951 and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Ramkhamhaeng University and a master’s degree from the same school in political management.

Vichai worked for and had been adviser to the Highlight Karnmuang newspaper (Highlight Politics newspaper), Taladvikrao newspaper (Market Analysis), Highlight Thurakit newspaper (Highlight Business), and was senior editor for the Kon Karn Maung (Politics Society).

He only learned of his Stage 4 liver cancer after he was elected to head the photographers’ group.
