A special assembly was held at Garden International School (GIS) on March 21 to mark the United Nations’ ‘Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination’.

The whole school met in the main hall for the assembly on March 21, which was led by Principal Dr Tasker. Year 9 first gave a presentation explaining exactly what racial discrimination was and then Year 8 students put on several skits to demonstrate how damaging and unfair racism is.

Teachers wore the school’s new white polo shirts, but some who ‘forgot’ and wore the blue variety were gently mocked – to help demonstrate how racism is unjust and hurtful.

Students then rapped to the Black Eyed Peas ‘Where is the Love?’ and performed their owner version of Michael Jackson’s anti-racist anthem ‘Black and White’, renaming it ‘Blue and White’.
