Chaidej Chitwiset said the main canal that runs through the heart of the sub-district is the lifeblood for plants and trees. If it is polluted or clogged, the community will wither. Hence this and other cleanups are held regularly.

The event was timed to commemorate Environment Day in Thailand on Dec. 4. Environment Day marks the anniversary of HM the late King’s historic 1989 speech on the need for environmental conservation.

Two years after the speech, a committee was set up to make Environment Day an annual event.

Chaidej said Baan Suan residents were aware of the growing environmental crisis affecting the country. Regular projects to plant trees, plants and clean up are held throughout the year to maintain the balance of nature and population.

Activities include dredging canals, recycling, washing public roads, wastewater management and more.
