Former president of the Rotary Club of Jomtien-Pattaya Chris Gibbins celebrated his 77th birthday by having friends bring not gifts for him, but rice for orphans.

About 50 friends joined Gibbins at the Red Lion on Soi Khao Noi June 6. He told everyone that, since he has everything he needs, to not bring presents. Instead he suggested bringing rice he could donate to underprivileged children at the Bamboo Orphanage in Kanchanaburi province.

In all, about 100 friends and Rotarians contributed, stacking up 3,560 kilograms of rice. The grain could feed the 40 orphans for six years, if it lasted that long.

As for the birthday party itself, a good time was had by all, with Rose of PJ Restaurant emceeing the evening’s entertainment, which saw many pick up the mike to sing.

A raffle was held, with one winner of a liter of Teachers whiskey surprising everyone by throwing it back in the pot for an impromptu auction, raising 1,500 baht.
