A modest birthday party for Ivy Schlageter

Some people get scared when they turn 70 while others look so fresh and young that the number of candles on their birthday cakes doesn’t seem to matter to them at all.

One of those lucky ones is Ivy Schlageter, who turned 70 on Nov. 5. She celebrated her birthday at the Thai Garden Resort and insisted that no present should be brought. Instead guests should arrange for a chauffeur to take them home safely, she said.

Born in Hong Kong, Schlageter was married for many years to Swiss national Peter Schlageter and settled with him in Pattaya where she has made many friends. Amongst them are Gerrit Niehaus, the owner of Thai Garden Resort, and his wife Anselma. Both welcomed her cordially with General Manager Rene Pisters and his wife Ploy.

There was no music during the party in respect for the mourning period for His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, but the Thai Garden Trio played “Happy Birthday” while the cakes were brought out. Schlageter managed to blow out the candles in one deep breath and received applause for it.

The guests, all clad in black and white, enjoyed the buffet, which had a few special extra items, and everybody enjoyed the birthday party in modest fashion. Amongst the 70 guests were quite a few relatives who travelled from Hong Kong for the occasion.
