Pattaya’s monument to the late His Majesty the King’s historic participation in the Southeast Asia Games’ sailing competition nearly 50 years ago has now become much more for local Thais mourning his death.

The statue located on Pattaya Beach near Royal Garden Plaza is now a magnet for those to remember and honor His Majesty and his 1967 sail in the 4th SEA Games, which was hosted by Pattaya.

Thais were seen Oct. 17 lighting candles and praying for HM the King’s ascension to heaven, as they have been every night of late.

Although always respectful of the Kingdom’s period of mourning, the gathering was full of friendliness as people fondly reminisced. Foreigners and Thais alike posed for photos and posted them to social media.

Those who did not know the history of the Pattaya Games were briefed by English-speaking residents and local authorities.
