Wednesday, July 24, Green Valley – Stableford

Green Valley in great condition was the word from the mouths of every player today; the greens were in grand shape and the course itself was manicured to perfection whereby you couldn’t get a bad lie anywhere.  Greens staff please keep up the good work!

With six groups starting we were all away early and no rain as Shutts always says, “it never rains on a day when I am playing.”

Friday winners (from left to right) Graham Beaumont, Gary Ritchie, Jeff North, Bob Newell, Helmut, Geoff Couch, Simon Philbrook and Jim Bell.Friday winners (from left to right) Graham Beaumont, Gary Ritchie, Jeff North, Bob Newell, Helmut, Geoff Couch, Simon Philbrook and Jim Bell.

Of late there has been the odd birdie ‘2’ but today there were seven of them – I think a record for the Billabong players.  They came from Paul Greenaway, Wayne Cotterell, Lloyd Shuttleworth,  Sel Wegner, Willim Lasonder, Neil Herd and Archie Armstrong, who is just back from a 2 month layoff with a bad back.

Taking fourth place in the stableford on a count back over John Player was Wayne Cotterell with 36 points.  In third was Paul Greenaway with 37 points and beating Paul into second place also on a count back was Mal Roberts.  Coming first was the consistent performer Sel Wegner with a fantastic 41 points – great scoring Sel!

Friday, July 26, Plutaluang –Scramble

Our monthly scramble at Plutaluang on the West and North loops was a huge success again with nine groups playing.  The course was in great condition with fast greens and good lies on all fairways.

There are always some funny things happening on golf courses and today was no exception.  I think everyone has heard of the legendary Moe Norman well Darl White tried to emulate him today on west six: having said the water was right where he would land his ball he aimed for the bridge and almost made it, just stopping a metre short.

Today was the first time I have ever heard of a tie in a scramble event but that was the result in this game.  The worst score of the day was 61.4 and they got better from there on, with third place being 58.2 coming from the team of Barry Williams, Mike Turp, Mal Farquharson and wayne Cotterell.  Now to the first equal the teams of Bob Newell, Gary Ritchie, Jim Bell and Simon Philbrook, and the quartet of Geoff Coach, Graham Beaumont, Jeff North and Helmut, both with a score of 57.5.

Our next scramble down here will be on the 30th August.  The Billabong golf bar in situated just off Siam Country Club Road looking straight down Lake Mabprachan.  Call Bob on 082 204 3411 if you are looking for a game.
