Monday, June 23, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford

1st Walter Baechli (15) 39pts

2nd John Hutt (28) 37pts

How green was your valley?  Well in this case, just stunning as we found ourselves on a beautiful golf course in fantastic condition once again.  It’s hard to beat Green Valley for consistency as the grounds crew here do a magnificent job of keeping this track in top nick.

The Golf Club has started an unofficial charity group consisting of Phil Smedley, David Ferris, John Hutt, John Eske and now contributing his winnings today, Walter Baechli.  Caddy “Joy” from Pattavia Century is the first beneficiary of the funds to give her a new smile.  Joy was in one of our groups earlier this month and the guys noted what poor condition her teeth had grown into and before you knew it, 50,000 baht had been raised for her cause.

The group met with her mother and brother and we are now in the long process of getting her dental problems sorted out one step at a time.  We will keep you posted and have a photo gallery of our progress.  Thank you gentlemen, for being such generous guests here in Thailand.  If you care to donate your time and help, please let us know.

Tuesday, June 24, Laem Chabang B & C (white tees) – Stableford

1st Les Cobain (8) 40pts

2nd Buddi Nogi (4) 37pts

2nd Mark Bamber (7) 37pts

It was a good day to be a single digit handicapper today as the podium had but 19 strokes given on the day.  Laem Chabang was the venue and Tuesday was their Sports Day so a good field of 20 golfers headed out to our local Jack Nicklaus course.

I had a memo sent to me a few days ago from here to let us know that until October 31, the weekday green fee will be only 1,000 baht.  They are giving us all this special price as renovations in the main building (restaurant, locker rooms and pro shop) will start now for the next 4 months.  This summer will be a great time to enjoy this beautiful course at a bargain rate!

I’m sure Les Cobain will be back, as his 40 point round was a great result for this 8 handicapper.  Les has proven elusive as of late and getting a photo of him has been impossible!  All right mate, maybe next time.  Buddi Nogi and Mark Bamber ended up tied at 37, three shots back from Les to share second place on the steps.

Thursday, June 26, Bangpakong (white tees) – Stableford

1st Dale Shier (13) 39pts

2nd David Ferris (25) 38pts

3rd Phil Smedley (9) 35pts

As nice as the other 2 courses were this week, Bangpakong let us down a bit with temporary greens and the rest of the greens sanded and choppy.  Fairways were perfect and the rest of the course was in fine condition so it wasn’t a total loss.  It was a surprise, really, as Bangpakong is usually in great shape, but maintenance is one of those necessary evils we must put up with.

That said, Dale Shier had no problem negotiating those greens and with 39 points on the card, we must wonder if he ever even noticed them.  Mr. Shier also put his winnings into the “Cure a Caddy” pot so thanks go to him for that.  Dale was completely overwhelmed by his win and is currently recuperating on the island of Koh Chang and due to be released shortly.

25 handicapper Dave Ferris was also on fire and a shot behind Shier for second.  Our fearless Golf Captain Phil Smedley turned in a sweet 35 for third place.  Thanks again to all, you guys are great!
