Sunday, July 2, St. Andrews – Stableford

A Flight

1st Rod Brown (22) 39pts

2nd Jeff Acheson (12) 39pts

3rd Gary Emmett (16) 34pts

B Flight

1st John Dearden (26) 39pts

2nd Aidan Murray (25) 32pts

3rd Tim Hicks (30) 31pts

A good turnout today for St. Andrews playing a rainbow comp (yellow, white & red tees).  The golfers had put a lot of pre-game strategy into this comp, planning which tee to play on each hole and most of it was a complete waste of time.  Play the longest holes off the red tees?  No, that’s not the way to play it.

We had 16 players and with no near pins it meant 2 flights with 3 places in each.  Rod Brown got off to a bad start but 24 points on the back-nine took him to the top of the podium in A Flight, closely followed by Jeff Acheson with the same 39 pts but losing out on count back.  Gary Emmett, a pay window specialist, completed the podium with 34 points after notching 20 on the last 7 holes.

In B Flight, John Dearden recorded 22 points on the front and 17 on the back on one of his least favourite courses to take victory.  Aidan Murray was 7 points back in second place followed by newcomer Tim Hicks with 31.

Monday, July 3, Pattavia – Stableford

A Flight

1st Mark Hafferden (+1) 35pts

2nd Steve Baker (18) 34pts

B Flight

1st Lee Smith (36) 40pts

2nd Barbara Cooper (41) 39pts

We had a good crowd today at Pattavia, with a few old friends boosting our numbers to 15 players and enough for 2 flights & 4 near pins.  The weather was good and the course in its usual excellent condition.  At the end of the game the management gave us a voucher for a meal or a drink which was much appreciated.

A Flight was led in by the silky smooth play of +1 handicapper Mark Hafferden who shot level par for 35 points.  He was followed by another newcomer, Steve Baker from Liverpool with 34 points, his 19 on the back just edging out Chetan Patel on count back.

Neil Smith’s nephew Lee took out the B Flight with a fine 40 points while just one back in second was Barbara Cooper.

The near pins were claimed by Colm O’Donavan (2), Tip Briney & Manfred Hanke.

Friday, July 7, Royal Lakeside – Stableford

A Flight

1st Steve Baker (20) 41pts

2nd Peter Hynard (18) 38pts

B Flight

1st Mick Coghlan (24) 39pts

2nd Barry Oats (28) 37pts

Near Pins: Vic Hester (2), Steve Baker & Paul West.

Long Putts: Kevin McEntee

We had a good turnout for the trek up the motorway to one of the best courses in the area, Royal Lakeside and welcomed back 2 red eyed boys from the Emerald Isle who had lost their golf clubs on the plane over and arrived in the wee hours the night before.  At least, that was the excuse offered up by Kevin Mc Entee & Matt Cronin for their poor scores today.

We had 16 players so 2 flights with 2 places in each plus 4 near pins and 1 longest putt.

A Flight was dominated by Steve Baker who also had a near pin to go with his 41 points.  He was followed up the podium steps by a speechless Peter Hynard with 38 points.

B Flight honours were shared by 2 old rouges with dodgy handicaps, Mick Coghlan with 39 points & Barry Oats with 37.

Vic Hester picked up 2 near pins while Paul West got the other and Kevin McEntee stayed awake long enough to sink the longest putt.
