Monday, April 24, Phoenix Gold – Stableford

Phoenix was the challenge on Monday on a great day for golf with just a light breeze blowing and not too hot.  The course was in grand condition and it was impossible to get a bad lie anywhere.  The road getting to Phoenix is slowly getting better and in another couple of weeks and it will all be sealed.  We will be playing the monthly scramble here from now on.

Coming in third today on a count back was Thiery Petrement with 33 points, getting the better of Lloyd Shuttleworth.  Capt Bob took second with 34 points and the little general Gerard Lambert garnered top spot with 35.

Wednesday, April 26, Green Valley – Monthly Medal

Do you ever feel that life is passing you by?  It seems that it was only 2 weeks ago that we had the final of the annual monthly medals but it was actually 4 weeks past, and here we were again with the Haven Consultants Monthly Medal sponsored by Brian Chapman.  Before you know it, we will be thinking about Christmas!

The expressions on the faces of those standing on the 1st tee ranged from ‘OK’ to ‘Oh no!’  But the monthly medal is always well supported with Brian, playing his only round of the month, kindly sponsoring a separate competition for both ladies and men.  A remarkable number of ladies today – 16 – added colour and smiles to the day’s activities and one young lady in  particular was very happy, scoring a gross 80, net 68, with 11 pars on the card and the winning trophy was presented to Miss Poopay by Brian Chapman.

Miss Phaeng was the bridesmaid today with a net 70, the same score as the consistent Miss Eng.  Miss Phin came 4th with net 71, carding 11 pars and 1 birdie.

An even more remarkable round came from George Barrie who had his lowest ever score of 83 gross, net 66 – perhaps a career defining moment?  His round started with a double bogey but 4 birdies and many pars helped to remedy that situation.  Back at the Billabong, George rang the bell in celebration and I am sure the trophy will occupy a prominent position at home.

Bill Marsden, returning from new Zealand and not having played golf for 3 months, forget any faults he had with his swing and just hit the ball to come home second with a net 70.  John Deardon relegated Bob Van Mol to 4th, both having a net 71.

Five 2s recorded today, which went to Miss Oh, Miss Yen, Bob Van Mol, Peter LeNoury and addressed by his very polite caddies as Mr. Wayne Cotterell, perhaps his nickname of Cottee will fall by the wayside.

Miss Poopay scored a gross 80 to take the Ladies’ medal.

Friday, April 28, Phoenix – 4P-Scramble

We have shifted the venue from The Navy course to Phoenix so from now on the monthly scramble will be here.  Apart from it being a bit hot and humid it was a great day out.  The course was in fantastic condition and a special thanks must go to the staff and management for making the 18 groups welcome at such short notice and for getting us away with time to spare.

With the first group setting off at 7.52am they were around the turn before the last 4 groups had teed-off.  It was good to see some of the regulars who haven’t been in the frame for a long time.

The team of Paul Hack, Paul Smith, Sal Brizzo and Bill Sturman took third spot with 58.5 while coming in second was the team from the Courtyard, i.e. Geoff Couch, Jeff North, Helmut Hebstriet and Chris Brendle with a score of 57.8.  The winners’ prize was taken by 0.1 of a shot by the quartet of Bob Newell, Bobby Young, Simon Philbrook and John McHugh with 57.7.
