Monday, Jan. 8, Phoenix Gold – Stableford
Phoenix today, playing Mountain and Lakes nines and apart from the rough these two loops were in excellent condition although some of the pin placements were in frightening positions. The rough is something else again and you need the whole 5 minutes to find a ball that hasn’t hit the fairway, even with all players and caddies looking.
The scores were a reflection of the course difficulty and the girls dealt with it best, Julie Battersby taking top spot with 39 points and Karen Craigie coming second with 38. Jim Payne took the bronze with an even par 36 and Graham Beaumont was fourth on 35 after edging a count-back over Glyn Davies.
There was only one ‘2’, coming from Capt Bob.
Wednesday, Jan. 10, Silky Oak – Stableford
There were a few intrepid golfers out here today at Silky Oak; the ladies started in quite heavy rain but would not give in and after 3 or 4 holes it stopped and turned out to be a great day, albeit a little under wet underfoot.
In the ladies tournament the scores were very good and the places went down to third, which was taken by Miss Wan with a fine 33 points. In second spot was a lady we see at the bar but very seldom on the golf course, Miss Am with 34 points, and the winner was Miss Tan with 37, not bad considering the conditions we played in.
The men’s competition went down to third also with John Anderson taking the bronze with 33, Sandy Chapo filling the silver spot with one point more and Jeff North having his day in the sun to score 38 points for the win.
There was only one ‘2’ but alas there wasn’t to be any prize today for that.
