Travellers Rest Golf Group
Monday, August 1, Pattana – Stableford
The TRGG got the golfing week up and running on Monday with a visit to Pattana (C and A courses).
Big Eddie Townsend has been threatening to win a golf competition for some time and has been putting in some very good scores of late. I was so confident he was going to hit the number 1 slot that I took his photo a couple of weeks ago knowing it would not be long before he hit the headlines. On Monday he did just that by winning at Pattana and his 34 points was good enough to show all the rest the way home. Recent winner Toshihiro Aoki made it into second place and another regular winner, Neil Wilkinson, finished third.
1st Eddie Townsend (21) 34pts
2nd Toshihiro Aoki (23) 32pts
3rd Neil Wilkinson (11) 30pts
Tuesday, August 2, Burapha – Stableford
It was over to Burapha (A and B courses) for our usual Tuesday outing. Now I don’t know what John Baxter has been eating or doing recently but I just have to find out. A month ago he was nearly down to an 18 handicap and complaining that even that was too high for him. Since then he has hit a couple of 40+ pointer rounds and is now down to a 13 handicap. I can only put it down to a concoction of monkey glands or that he is in love, because at the moment he can do no wrong. His 41 points at Burapha was by far and away the best round of the day and was easily good enough to walk away with all the money.
Kim Scadden probably thought he had done enough to finish top but his 37 points sank into oblivion compared to John Baxter’s score. Anyway, it was good enough for second place and Jim Cooper also had a good day and finished third on 35 points.
1st John Baxter (15) 41pts
2nd Kim Scadden (19) 37pts
3rd Jim Cooper (11) 35pts
Wednesday, August 3, St. Andrews – Stableford
It was off to St. Andrews on Wednesday – Rayong that is, not Edinburgh, Scotland. The course with two par sixes is not easy for the average golfer but surprisingly the top three places all went to middle range handicappers, so it just goes to show that if you hang in there it is still possible to finish in the lead.
Kim Scadden was obviously still upset by only finishing in second place the day before and went one better at St Andrews. His 33 points proved to be the best score on the day and for the rest of his life Kim can tell all his grandchildren he won a golf competition at St. Andrews. Big John O’Donoghue finished a point behind in second place and Billy Allan took third spot.
1st Kim Scadden (18) 33pts
2nd John O’Donoghue (18) 32pts
3rd Billy Allan (17) 31pts
Thursday, August 4, Green Valley – Stableford
Thursday, 4th August, which by coincidence was the day I started work fifty one years ago, turned out to be the day Gerrard Shannon won a golf competition at Green Valley. Ah 1965, I remember it as though it was yesterday, what a year that was.
Gerrard shot a very respectable 36 points to come home in the lead and finish in first place. Three shots behind him came Roger Wilkinson and Jim Groves; Roger just pipping Jim after a count back.
1st Gerrard Shannon (14) 36pts
2nd Roger Wilkinson (33) 33pts
3rd Jim Groves (13) 33pts
Friday, August 5, Greenwood – Stableford
On Friday the golfing week came to a conclusion with another trip over to Greenwood (A and B courses). Billy Ostle had an exceptionally good day on a course that always plays long at this time of year and rattled up 38 points. It proved enough to relegate last Friday’s winner, Fergus Brennan, down into second place while young Craig McAvinue took third spot after finishing with 35 points.
1st Billy Ostle (12) 38pts
2nd Fergus Brennan (12) 36pts
3rd Craig McAvinue (14) 35pts
