PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Monday, April 21, Burapha – Stableford

A small field of 19 Outbackers played the nearly empty B and D nines, this time both from the white tees which resulted in better scores than previously.

The greens were as good as they have been for some time, although the rough on both nines remains brutal and needs mowing.  Not that this seemed to worry the straight-hitting Bruce Mcadam, who won Div B with 37pts to beat regular West Aussie visitor, Shane Crane with 36 and Bob Lindborg 35.

In Div A, John Cunningham recorded the day’s best score of 39pts to win from Geoff Stimpson (38) and Mark Kembrey (37).

Finally, welcome back to Alex Graham and Roy Barrell.

There were five ‘2’s from Alex Graham, Peter Nixon & John Cunningham (D2) and John Cunningham & Geoff Stimpson (D8).

Tuesday, April 22, Laem Chabang – Stableford

As the ‘B’ nine remains closed, we found ourselves once again on the C and A loops, starting on C.  With just three groups, we were away a little earlier than the official post time and the round played at a reasonable pace.

Barry Copestake came out the traps very fast to score a fantastic 24pts on the tricky front nine before faltering a little on the back to win comfortably with 39pts.  He was four up on the flying Scot, Alex Graham, who tucked another tidy round under his belt of 35 to follow his 36pts at Burapha, and beating playing partner Chopper on count back.

Sugar Ray got the only ‘2’ on A2.

1st Barry Copestake (15) 39pts

2nd Alex Graham (9) 35pts

3rd Kerry Rothman (12) 35pts

Wednesday, April 23, Bangpra – Stableford

Four full groups at a reasonably quiet, yet beautiful Bangpra today in muggy conditions, making for a very hot sweltering day.

There’s nothing easy about this course; it’s long, with plenty of trouble about if one errs from the fairways and although the greens have been made a little easier as they have allowed the grass to grow a little, they are by no means a pushover.

Alex, who took the win with another solid round to score 35pts, said “I struck the ball really well and should have scored more but I couldn’t get my short irons to hold the greens”, but otherwise he was very satisfied and enjoyed the course.

Sel Wegner found himself in second place with 32 and also picked up the prize for the only ‘2’, whilst one of our Perth visitors, Frank, took third on 31.  Kim Danboise (also 31) and Barry McIntosh (30) filled the remaining two podium places.

The monkeys put on a display not seen here for a long time, many carrying young, whilst the others were charging around like lunatics and very funny to watch climbing a tree to about 12 feet before leaping off into the nearby lake fully spreadeagled and landing with a belly flop.

For the second time this week, there was only ‘2’, this time from Sel Wegner on the 8th.

1st Alex Graham (9) 35pts

2nd Sel Wegner (15) 32pts

3rd Frank Connor (16) 31pts

4th Kim Danboise (20) 31pts

5th Barry McIntosh (20) 30pts

Friday, April 25, Green Valley – Stableford

25 Outbackers at Green Valley today, quite a few less than usual but it was Anzac Day and some guys were paying tribute to this special day.

I have just looked up last year’s records and Green Valley sanded and cored the greens this time last year, resulting in the course being in below average condition with many of the fairways burnt and with parts of the rough looking like the Sahara Desert.

It was very disappointing to many of the regulars, as Green Valley usually maintains a high standard but although the greens had a few lumps and bumps the scores didn’t reflect this.

Kerry Beck’s round started with 1pt, 1pt, wipe, 1pt and then on the back nine he shot a gross 34, ending up with 41pts, the day’s top score and winning Div A – well done Mr Beck.  Martin Kingswood, hot from his golf in Hua Hin, put another good round together to score 38pts for second and welcome to Matt Badman, playing with us for the first time today, who also had 38, losing out on count back.  The very consistent Alex Graham finished his week’s golf with another 36 for fourth.

Barry McIntosh’s chip-in on the 18th, gave him a five-pointer, elevating him to first place in Div B with 39pts to beat Andy Makara on c/b and with Suzi’s game still improving whilst John is away, she took third with 38 and Waldo fourth, heading a three-way c/b on 35.

Walter Pinichi got the only ‘2’ on the 12th.
