The Golf Club weekly review
Monday, August 14, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford
1st Richard Goodwyn (18) 42pts
T2nd Phil Smedley (13) 37pts
T2nd Peter LeNoury (13) 37pts
All good things must come to an end, and for our buddy Pete, this was his last round in Pattaya for a few months. Mr. LeNoury is headed back to Guernsey for the summer and to let his Great Danes take him for a walk and put a few miles on the new Audi. Pete tied with Capt. Phil at 37 points, but Phil somehow managed to get the near pin on the day.
Richard Goodwyn was on fire out there today and a 42 will usually win easily, and it did. We have taken an 8 week hiatus from Green Valley for renovations and it is now back on our regular rota. The course was patchy, and of course I refer to the fairways at Green Valley. We had to play ‘lift, clean and place’ as those sod patches have not settled in yet. The greens were fantastic though, and that’s where you make your money!
Tuesday, August 15, Silky Oaks (white tees) – Stableford
1st Dave Ferris (17) 43pts
2nd Andrew Herbert (14) 41pts
3rd Steve Coghlan (33) 34pts
We played two different comps today as some of us headed up to Kabinburi Sports Club with the P.S.C. and others joined in for an unscheduled day out to Silky Oaks. Surprisingly, we had 12 golfers for the outing today which ain’t too bad for the low season and a last minute venue. The course was a bit furry on the greens, slow but still running true, but lovely fairways more than made up for it.
Kabinburi was a big success with 54 golfers on a flawless golf course and hosted by Oliver at The Serenity Hotel and Onsen Spa, where I put on a few kilos at those fantastic buffets they do!
For Silky Oaks, it was all Dave Ferris as he stormed to a 43 and the Caddy Smile near pin as well! Andrew Herbert was the only one close behind at 41 and getting better every month, Steve Coghlan was 34 off 33 for third place.
Friday, August 18, Bangpra (white tees) – Stableford
1st Rob Knight (11) 33pts
2nd Phil Smedley (12) 29pts
3rd Andrew Herbert (13) 25pts
Ah yes, the monkey course again. A great layout, this Bangpra track is one of the best around. Only two groups was a surprise today as we don’t get out here too often so I thought more blokes would sign up, but apparently not.
Overcast skies made it a bit easier and certainly more enjoyable. The bad news was the front nine was cored and sanded, but at the turn we found the rest of the greens just fine. The rough however, was punishing with a very strong crabgrass not wanting to let go of your ball.
You don’t often get rewarded for scoring just 25 points, but Andrew Herbert did today. The Captain turned in a 29 for second but it was only Rob Knight with a proper score of 33 for the big win. Nobody hit the near pin green so thank you for the Caddy Smile donation guys!
Most important, it was Ally’s 9 th birthday today for a proud papa!
