PSC golf from the Outback Golf Bar

Monday, August 1, Burapha – Stableford

Twenty two Outbackers travelled to Burapha for our last Monday there, as we switch to Khao Kheow as of next Monday, 8th August, with Burapha moving to Wednesdays, starting 10th August.

The day started off cold, gloomy and overcast and never really improved but thankfully the rain held off until the closing couple of holes.  Buggy’s were not allowed on the fairways had received a lot of rain overnight, but the fairways and rough still looked as if they had been cut and the course was presented well, apart from the greens on the D nine which have not fully recovered from there recent coring and sanding.

With 22 players we had 2 divisions and some good scoring by a number of golfers.  Division B was won by Bill Conway (34) with the day’s top score, a brilliant 41 points, closely followed by Owen Walkely (9) with 40pts, which won Div A.  He (Owen) was 5 points clear of John Cunningham (8) and Steve Mann (11) both with 35.

The scoring was better in Div B, as Bob Lindborg (19) took second on 38 from Andy Brady (25) on 37, who has fared well since starting playing with the Outback, a week or so ago.

There were only two ‘2’s from Steve Durey on hole D2 and Pete Stonebridge on hole D8.

Tuesday, August 2, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford

Many of the 12 Outbackers at Pattaya C.C. today, played here yesterday as well, although the scoring was not quite so high.  Yesterday’s winner, Dave Earthrowl romped home by a country mile with 44pts, whereas today he could only manage 34, although he was playing off a somewhat lower handicap.

Bernie Stafford (33 yesterday) improved to 36pts, which was enough to win today, from his playing partner Ian Heddle in second , who fired 75 gross on Monday and 76 gross today off a 2 handicap, for his 34.

There were three others also with 34pts, sorted out by count-back; Ian beat Dennis by virtue of his 12pts on the last 6 holes, both having 19 on the back 9 and Dennis in turn beat Chris Wright, who could only manage 15 on the back.

The course was Ok’ish with a few poorly raked bunkers about and some very bumpy greens but they do look set to improve in the next few weeks.  The grass planting work on the bunker slopes is also continuing.

There were three ‘2’s from Bernie Stafford on hole 12 and two from Ian Heddle, also on hole 12 and another on hole 5.

1st Bernie Stafford (12/Hi12.4) 36pts

2nd Ian Heddle (2/Hi3.6) 34pts

3rd Dennis Persson (17/Hi17.2) 34pts

4th Chris Wright (18/Hi18.1) 34pts

5th David Earthrowl (18/Hi18.1) 34pts

Wednesday, August 3, Eastern Star – Stableford

Fifteen Outbackers travelled to Eastern Star for the first time this year on a lovely sunny day.  The course has undergone changes during the last twelve months, mainly the replacement of all greens; which were clearly young but were still good and will certainly improve as they get older.  The fairways had worm mounds after the recent rain and that distracted from the course presentation but they generally had a good coverage of grass and were very playable.

We had the course basically to ourselves and with a three ball at the front a fast pace was set for all to follow.  We played the white markers at 6500 yards for the boys which made for a tough day especially as the wind was blowing quite strongly.

The winner of the day was Nuan Keddie in her last game at the Outback as Nuan is returning to Tasmania.  Nuan had 38 points on her 20 handicap, from Stephen Mann with 36 on his 11 handicap; third was the continually improving Bill Conway with 34 points on his 30 handicap, with John Fitzgerald fourth on his 16 handicap with 28 points on a count-back from Greg Hill and Brian Maddox.

There was one ‘2’ to John Fitzgerald.

1st Nuan Keddie (20/Hi19.1) 38pts

2nd Steve Mann (11/Hi10.9) 36pts

3rd Bill Conway (31/Hi29.5) 35pts

Friday, August 5, Green Valley – Stableford

The Outback Bar has chosen Green Valley as it’s new Friday venue for the foreseeable future and they couldn’t of done it better.  The course was ours for the day with no hold-ups and the weather was beautiful.  The course was there for the taking, with no wind, great fairways, tees and rough cut with greens that were true but not as fast as they could be.

We teed of early and would like to commend all players for turning up at least half an hour before normal tee off.  Even Tony McDonough was on time even though he lost the van, his bag, his shoes and if you ask his mates, his brain, but then that’s what happens in Thailand.

28 players were scheduled to play and with some omissions and additions we ended up with 27.  Welcome to Jack Butler, Mike Allidi, Jan Eriksen, Tony McDonough, Stuart Sutton and May Mitchell having their first game with the Outback for a while and goodbye to Andy Brady who leaves as for sunny Scotland.

We had two divisions, 0 to 14 and 15+.  Division B was won by May Mitchell with 40 points on her adjusted handicap of 19.  May played great golf and will only improve.  Second was the continually improving Steve Durey with 39 points on his 20 handicap, third was Kissy Buchanan with 36 points on his 16 handicap and fourth was Andy Brady with 34 points on his 25 handicap.

Division A was won by Jan Eriksen with 37 points on his 14 handicap, from Stephen Mann with 36 points on his 11 handicap, third was Jack Butler with 35 points on his 13 handicap and fourth was Nigel Flanagan with 34 points on his 11 handicap.

There were three ‘2’s to Nigel Flanagan on hole 9, with Andy Brady & John Player on hole 12.

Div A (0-14)

1st Jan Eriksen (14) 37pts

2nd Steve Mann (11/Hi10.9) 36pts

3rd Jack Butler (13) 35pts

4th Nigel Flanagan (11/Hi11.3) 34pts

Div B (15+)

1st May Mitchell (19/Hi21) 40pts

2nd Steve Durey (20/Hi19.2) 39pts

3rd Keith Buchanan (16) 36pts

4th Andy Brady (25/Hi23.6) 34pts
