PSC Golf from the Café Kronborg

Tuesday, May 29, Treasure Hill – Stableford

We decided to take advantage of the Treasure Hill Sports Day price and play on Tuesday instead of Monday this week and ended up with our smallest field for quite a while as just eleven golfers were on the starting sheet.  We welcomed back Stu Rifkin after his couple of weeks in Australia and newcomer Tony Turnbull from Dallas, Texas.

Leaving the Kronny right on time at 0815 hrs we managed to catch most of the red lights on 331 which accounted for the slower than normal journey of 53 minutes.  Sports Day or not the course was deserted and we were able to tee off at our leisure.  Our first group, a three ball got away 30 minutes ahead of schedule at 0930 hrs and in overcast conditions proceeded at a cracking pace and finished the front nine in one hour & forty seven minutes.

There was a fairly strong breeze which was making things a bit tricky but the ever improving course was in great nick with tip top greens although I personally found them a touch slower than normal.  It was millionaire’s golf and even with a drink stop on the back nine we were able to complete our full round in three hours and forty minutes.

Most of the field were finding the going a bit tough as is reflected in the scoring with just one golfer playing to their handicap.  At 500 baht Green Fee this course is excellent value on a Sports Day and will certainly be regularly on our future schedules.

With the small field there was just the one flight with 5 place-getters.

In first place was Bo Cardwell with 36 points, one point ahead of Ken “let’s hear it for” Bernek in second place.  With 2 golfers on 33 points a count back was necessary with returnee Stu Rifkin (20 point back nine) taking third spot from Mike Winfield (19 point back nine) in fourth place. Another count back was necessary to determine fifth place with newcomer Tony Turnbull (19 point back nine) just shading Mike Gosden (18 point back nine), both having 32 points.

1st Bo Cardwell (27) 36pts

2nd Ken Bernek (16) 35pts

3rd Stu Rifkin (16) 33pts

4th Mike Winfield (20) 32pts

5th Tony Turnbull (20) 32pts

The Admiral very nearly went from chocolates to boiled lollies after his 42 points the previous Thursday but he was saved by Dick Braimbridge who won the Compass Cap (awarded for worst score on the day) in fine style.  Deefa the Dog was present and paraded by Hunter & collected several donations to charity from the generous Kronny crew.

Thursday, May 31, Royal Lakeside – Stableford

As usual we were all looking forward to our monthly visit to Royal Lakeside Golf Club despite the longer than normal road trip and we had fifteen golfers on the day’s starting sheet.  We were happy to welcome back Jerry Dobbs & Daryl Evans from Queensland, Australia and also three handicapper Russell Goldsworthy from my old Golf Club Gosnells in Perth, Western Australia.

Mike Gosden.Mike Gosden.

Departing Café Kronborg three minutes ahead of schedule at 0812 hrs we “flew” along No. 7 and arrived at the course in the record time of 56 minutes.  Once more we found the course practically deserted as now is the norm in this low, low season and we were able to send our first group, a three ball away 30 minutes ahead of schedule at 0930 hrs.

Teeing off on the par five 1st into a fairly stiff breeze there were none of us able to reach the green in regulation but it was apparent that the golf course was in super condition and the greens were splendidly presented.  The weather was great also and the breeze was cooling things down a little making it perfect conditions for playing golf.

We had “Mama” Bo Cardwell in our group and it was obvious that she was continuing her good form of two days earlier and it seems that the golf lessons that she is taking are certainly doing the trick for her.  We continued at a very good pace and with a 10 minute drink stop were able to complete the round in four hours & ten minutes.

We had 2 flights on the day with A Flight for handicaps of 0 to 18 and B Flight for 19 and over.

For the third Thursday in a row it was Aussie Michael Bruce Gosden who took out the A Flight with a steady 36 points, 1 point ahead of Ken “let’s hear it for” Bernek in second place and your writer was third with 34 points.  Bo Cardwell blitzed the field with a terrific 41 points while winning B Flight, a massive 8 points ahead of returnee Jerry Dobbs who finished second.  Another returnee, Daryl Evans had 32 points and finished in third place.

A Flight

1st Mike Gosden (11) 36pts

2nd Ken Bernek (16) 35pts

3rd Peter Blackburn (12) 34pts

B Flight

1st Bo Cardwell (27) 41pts

2nd Jerry Dobbs (22) 33pts

3rd Daryl Evans (23) 32pts

Dick Braimbridge managed to repeat his performance of two days earlier and won the Compass Cap (awarded for the worst score of the day) and Hunter paraded Deefa the Dog who once more collected many donations to charity from the generous Kronny Crew.
