PSC Golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Monday, Feb. 23, Burapha – Stableford

Five groups played C and D in hot conditions as the humidity begins to increase generally at this time of year.  There was a marked difference between the scores in the two divisions indicating that the lower markers score on this tough course better than higher ones.

The best anyone could do in Div B was 32 points; three of them managed that led by Stefan Hoge, beating Ivan Plunkett and John O’Keefe on count back.  Jim Brackett continued his strong recovery, winning the top division with 36 points ahead of Lee Grace (35) and Peter Nixon (33).

John O’Keefe and Ivan Plunkett both had ‘2’s on the same hole (D2).

Tim Knight (rear) was a winner at Green Valley.Tim Knight (rear) was a winner at Green Valley.

Outback opinion: Weather – fine, hot; Check in – quick and courteous; Tee time – slightly early; Fairways – damp; Rough – light; Greens – average; Bunkers – ok; Value for money – reasonable for time of year; Pace of play – 4 hours; Drink stations open – two open.

2nd Lee Grace (15) 35pts

Tuesday, Feb. 24, Phoenix – Stableford

General Jack turned out to start the 14 players here at the regular Tuesday venue Phoenix, commencing on the recently refurbished Ocean nine, followed by Mountain, which has also had a facelift.  We heard news that money has now been allocated to renovate the Lake nine although no date has been given as to when the work is likely to start.

The course was quiet and the conditions ideal but the scoring was surprising low, with Dave Smith’s 35 points being enough to win the day, beating playing companion Geoff Stimpson by just one shot.

There were two ‘2’s from Geoff Stimpson (O5) and Satu Lehtonen (O7)

1st Dave Smith (08) 35pts

2nd Geoff Stimpson (06) 34pts

3rd Mike Missler (05) 32pts

Wednesday, Feb. 25, Bangpra – Stableford

A couple of our regulars at Bangpra were in the middle of a four-day tournament, with today as a rest day, so there were just three groups playing this great value for money course.  Our early start was welcomed as the day got quite hot, so it was nice to be finishing in the middle of the day.

The winner, playing his last game with us this trip, was Gareth Hearne with a very good 37 points… his 23-point second nine was fantastic.  Second was Geoff Stimpson with 36 and third with 34 points was Stefan Hoge.

Mike Missler chipped in on the 12th to have the only ‘2’.

Outback opinion: Weather – fine, getting hotter; Check in – efficient; Tee time – on time; Fairways – hard; Rough – light; Greens – slow for this course; Bunkers – ok; Value for money – excellent; Pace of play – 4 hours; Drink stations open – all open; Restaurant – excellent

1st Gareth Hearne (27) 37pts

2nd Geoff Stimpson (08) 36pts

4th Peter Nixon (12) 31pts

Friday, Feb. 27, Green Valley – Stableford

We had 39 players today with two ‘no-shows’ but one extra turned up.  We couldn’t help but notice that Green Valley had put new silver tee markers out and they looked good, with some of them on different tee boxes to the reds.  Some of the white tees were further back than normal and others were more forward but no real difference to the scoring.

Joint top score of the day came from Jarod Braithwaite with 38 points to win Div B, beating Seppo Kontio (36) by two with Sugar (35), who edged out Jimmy Little on c/b, back in third.  Div A went to Peter Nixon (also with 38), from welcome visitor Geoff Couch (37) and Peter LeNoury (35) was third.

Tim Knight, who is at last finding his game, headed Div C on 37 points, six clear of Bob Lindborg (31) with an even more distant and very surprised Suzi Lawton in third with just 27.

There were four ‘2’s from Jukka Kangas (5th), Tim Knight (8th), Jim Brackett (12th) and Eddy Beilby 16th.

Outback opinion: Weather – getting hot; Check in – good; Tee time – on time; Fairways – need cutting, weeds in places; Rough – playable; Greens – moderate; Bunkers – ok; Value for money – good; Pace of play – 4hrs 15min; Drink stations open – all open
