Bramley barnstorms at Burapha

Travellers Rest Golf Group

It was without question the busiest week of the year at the TRGG last week with more golfers turning up to play than at any time this high season.  It was just like the good old days.

To round the week off the TRGG moved home base once again and Saturday was moving day.  They say that football/soccer is a game of two halves well at the TRGG we have just completed two halves.  We have just moved into the right hand bar now known as Valentines Guest House Restaurant & Bar from the left hand bar known as the Ned Kelly Bar.  When we first moved there it was all one double fronted bar but about a year ago it split into two bars.

Confused ?  You are not the only one.

Neil Bramley.

Anyway the new venue has received a complete makeover in the last six months and we believe offers our customers more pleasant surroundings.

The weather in Thailand, it would appear, is also a little confused with even more rain in the week.  This is supposed to be the dry season and most of us regulars have never known it to rain in January before.  Global warming I hear you say.

Monday, Jan. 18, Phoenix Gold – Stableford

The busy week got up and running with the usual short trip over to Phoenix (Ocean and Mountain courses) on Monday.  In Division 1 it was Scotsman Ian Bell who was directing traffic (he used to be a police officer so he should know how to form an orderly queue with him in the lead).  He scorched over the wet ground and racked up 41 points, a sterling effort.  Mind you, he needed to be that good because only a point behind came second placed Nick Thomas who works in the legal profession.  Derek Thorogood, who currently polices the TRGG, kept the theme going by taking third place.

Kevin Smith.

In Division 2 Peter Cahill showed that it was not just the top flight winner who could rack up 41 points because he did the same, well done Peter!  In second place came Chassie Byrd on 36 points and Brendon McEvoy took third spot two further back.

Div.1 (0-15)

1st Ian Bell (5) 41pts

2nd Nick Thomas (12) 40pts

3rd Derek Thorogood (15) 39pts

Div.2 (16+)

1st Peter Cahill (20) 41pts

2nd Chassie Byrd (27) 36pts

3rd Brendon McEvoy (17) 34pts

Tuesday, Jan. 19, Burapha – Stableford

On Tuesday it was off to play Burapha (C and D courses) and for the only time this week there was only one division as we couldn’t split the large field evenly.

Neil Bramley, who used to top the leader board almost every week at one time, returned to top spot today with a vengeance.  There were calls for a drugs test after he stormed home with 44 points but knowing Neil the only drug he consumes is the game of golf itself.

Billy Allan.

In second place about ten miles behind came Joe Stranks who just bettered Kevin Smith after a count back.

1st Neil Bramley (9) 44pts

2nd Joe Stranks (12) 35pts

3rd Kevin Smith (13) 35pts

Wednesday, Jan. 20, The Emerald – Stableford

Another large turnout headed off to play Emerald on Wednesday.

In Division 1 Jack Watkins had a day to remember, shooting an excellent 40 points which was miles too good for Rungratree Cox in second place and Roger Wilkinson in third.

In Division 2 Brendon McEvoy showed that his first place the previous week was no fluke by doing it again this week.  It was a close run finish however, with Peter Cahill a point behind in second and Jack Macnamara a further point back in third.

Div.1 (0-13)

1st Jack Watkins (10) 40pts

2nd Rungratree Cox (7) 33pts

3rd Roger Wilkinson (13) 32pts

Div. 2 (14+)

1st Brendon McEvoy (17) 33pts

2nd Peter Cahill (18) 32pts

3rd Jack Macnamara (17) 31pts

Thursday, Jan. 21, Green Valley – Stableford

Thursday meant it was Green Valley providing the examination and in Division 1 Paul Hubbard managed to keep his prodigiously long drives on the straight and narrow to take first place with 35 points.  A point behind came Neil Bramley and in third it was the man who practices every day, Mike Rushant.  It’s no wonder that he’s always there or thereabouts.

In Division 2 the Welsh maestro Alun Webber picked up his fourth victory in just over a month by being the only player on the day to shoot his handicap.  Peter Cahill made it into second place and Bjorn Werner was third.

Div.1 (0-15)

1st Paul Hubbard (10) 35pts

2nd Neil Bramley (7) 34pts

3rd Mike Rushant (9) 33pts

Div. 2 (16+)

1st Alun Webber (21) 36pts

2nd Peter Cahill (18) 34pts

3rd Bjorn Werner (16) 33pts

Friday, Jan. 22, Greenwood – Stableford

The busy golfing week was rounded off on Friday with a visit to Greenwood (A and B courses).

In Division 1 Kevin Smith did the business to finish first, Mike Smith was second and Ian Bell took third.

Billy Allan returned from Australia to the top of the leader board in Division 2 while Suresh Mehta took the runners up spot and Joan Murphy finished third.

Div. 1 (0-14)

1st Kevin Smith (14) 36pts

2nd Mike Smith (6) 35pts

3rd Ian Bell (4) 35pts

Div. 2 (15+)

1st Billy Allan (16) 37pts

2nd Suresh Mehta (19) 32pts

3rd Joan Murphy (18) 29pts

Good luck to all you golfers for the coming week and if you would like to play a round of golf with the TRGG please phone Derek Thorogood on 080 673 3118 or pop into the Valentines Guest House (Restaurant and Bar) in Soi Lengkee and add your name to the weekly lists which are posted on the notice board.
