Green Valley was the venue for today and the ‘old girl’ did not let us down. The course was in great shape and all 40 golfers were ready for a fine day of golf in the Kingdom.
Those hard drinkin’ Aussies are in town and keeping up with them is never an easy task but we had to try our best! To make matters even more difficult, it was Gary Emmett’s 60th birthday and that gave us no excuse at all for jumping on the sobriety train this week.

It was a nice cool day for golf and the overcast skies were a treat from the hot weather of late. All except the last 2 groups got through the round rain free, but a sudden downpour soaked the last 8. The leaderboard above tells the tale of the tape, and it was our mate Gary Billingham (who is over for Mr. Emmett’s birthday bash) who had a beautiful round of 40 points to take the top spot on the podium.
Wednesday, March 26, Silky Oaks (white tees) – Stableford

This was the first time I had played this course so it was a day to look forward to. It was a very interesting layout and being right next to St. Andrews, the setting was magnificent. The fairways were generous enough and as we played off the white tees, the 5,973 yards seemed to go on forever. The course played more like 6,300, which is our average length. A few of the holes had pretty long carries over water so the choice of white tees was definitely the correct one, especially when you add in the wind factor as well!
We had some of the US Navy lads join us today and of course we are happy to show the sailors some terra firma in the guise of a beautiful golf course! They all had a great time and were perfect gentlemen golfers the whole day. Glad to have the U.S.S. Frank Cable in town!
Mark Wood was the man of the day and from the first hole birdie, it was in his hands the whole time. The Scotsman is certainly used to the wind and his approach shots were laser-like in their accuracy. It was great fun to watch Mark go from strength to strength and to see our old mate take the day with ease. Well played Mr. Wood!
Friday, March 28, Greenwood – Monthly Medal

Oh dear, time for the Monthly Medal already. Funny how time slips away, as the song goes, but 2014 is well underway. Greenwood was our venue for the comp today and 3 vans were ready to roll.
You just never know how these things are going to turn out. Medal play is a whole other ball game and one bad hole can put you out of the action. We must thank TGC pal Jack Grindvold for helping us out today as Captain Phil is still AWOL in Australia for another week.
Fellow Swede Peter Larsson stayed the course and turned in a fine 75 for third spot on the podium while regular Kenny Aihara came so close today but just not quite enough and a shot back on 74 for second place.
The honours for this month’s medal goes to veteran golfer Tom Breslin who outsmarted the low handicappers and big hitters to win the coveted March Monthly Medal with a 73 net off his 24 handicap. That’s a great round Tom, well done mate!
