Bunker Boys Golf Society
Monday, Jan. 30, Silky Oak – Rainbow Stableford
1st Geoff Parker (14) 36 pts
2nd Michael Brett (17) 35pts
3rd Colin Greig (9) 33pts
Near Pins: Raleigh Gosney, Colin Greig, Keith Norman.
The lure of a beautiful course, seldom played, and rainbow stableford, a format also seldom played was insufficient to lure the Bunker Boys out to play the first game of a new week. A very disappointing thirteen players were rewarded with a course in pristine condition in a beautiful location, and ideal weather conditions.
Greens were slower than we had become accustomed to in recent weeks, with many players putts failing to reach the hole. The challenge of selecting the most appropriate tee on each hole added to the intrigue of this format. Some holes with a long carry over water made tee selection easy, however, other holes proved more difficult than one might expect, in particular a short eighty-yard par three proved to be too much for several players who failed to register a point on this hole.
Overall scoring was much improved over recent outings, with Geoff Parker leading the way with a well compiled thirty-six points. Except for a bit of brain fade late in the round Geoff could easily have exceeded forty points. One point back was Michael Brett in second place, with Colin Greig in third with thirty-three points.
Golfer of the Month, which had been a see-saw battle for much of January, was only decided on the closing holes with Colin Greig (going for three in a row) being edged out by the eventual first-time winner Michael Brett.
It is to be hoped that more of the Bunker Boys will rediscover their spirit of adventure for different courses and golf formats in the future.
Wednesday, Feb. 1 Bangpra (white tees) – Stableford
1st Les Burns (31) 36pts
2nd Frank Quinlan (34) 34pts
3rd Neil Carter (15) 33pts
Near Pins: PJ Redmond (2), Les Cobban, Ken Davidson (2).
We had a better turnout today for this regular venue on our calendar. The course was in its usual good condition with the first nine greens closely mowed and running fast and true and the back nine just top dressed and a lot slower.
Something that does not happen too often was a tie for a near pin between PJ Redmond and Les Cobban and despite using the flagstick to try and separate the two contenders eventually it was decided to share the honors.
Les Burns was on form today and put together a fine round of 36 points despite a rules query which was decided in his favor. PJ Redmond lost the count back for third place to Neil Carter by one point on the back nine.
Friday, Feb. 3, Greenwood (white tees) – Stableford
1st Neil Griffin (25) 38pts
2nd Eddie Kelly (18) 37pts
3rd Trevor Priestly (22) 33pts
Near Pin: Bob Cowell.
This course is also becoming a regular feature because it is always in fine shape with beautiful greens, even after hollow tining and top dressing.
The course was playing very long after a overnight shower and only Bob Cowell managed to get on a single short hole, thus pocketing the spoils. Neil Griffen had his putting shoes on today and never missed a putt of under ten feet, beating Eddie Kelly by a single shot. Trevor Priestly came in third four strokes back.
