First off, our thanks to Mark West for running the PSC golf this last year and his hard work to get us all the best rates available all year round. Best of luck to Mark in the future!
Bob Mulholland, Mathias Herman and Rick Allison.
It was an abbreviated week of golf this week as the Pattaya Sports Club had their monthly members comp on Tuesday (see the full story on page 42.)
We got the usual 9 p.m. call on Sunday night, “It’s Jack, can you sign me up for tomorrow?” Mr. Grindvold has a busy schedule so I know how difficult it is to commit 5 hours away from work to get in your round of golf. So with one last golfer on the sheet, Phil got to the business of getting the lads in their groups.
We had a pretty good turnout for our regular Monday Green Valley trip and 2 vans and a couple of cars full of anxious golfers headed out east on the old 36. Time is running out for Ozzie Rick Allison on this trip and the 2-handicapper managed yet another podium finish for fourth place. Scotsman Bob Muholland has had a good run as well and a card with 35 points on it netted him to third place.
Continuing with the international theme, Germany was up next and Mathias Herman ended up level with Swede Jack Grindvold (good thing he signed up after all!) and at 36 points they tied at the top. Nice to see one of those truly multinational podiums!
Thursday, May 21, Burapha C & D (blue tees) – Stableford
1st Ian Brimble (6) 40pts
2nd Martin Zimmerman (17) 36pts
3rd Steve Ellison (18) 35pts
Looking down on the 16th green on D at Burapha.
We woke up to a beautiful sunny day this morning as the stifling heat from the last 2 weeks seems to be letting up. This is the hottest time of year in Pattaya but now I think we have seen the worst of it.
Burapha was today’s golf destination and it has been a few months since we were last here. This is a great track and we found her in top condition as expected. The back nine on the D circuit was a blast and as we got to the top of the hill on the 17th we could see for miles down to Jomtien as it became a crystal clear day.
Captain Phil chose the blue tees for today’s event as the white boxes were just too short. We try to find a happy medium here at around the 6,300 yard mark but weather and conditions also come into play and the blues were just fine. I am not a long hitter and even I managed to scrape round with 35 points for third! With another point on his card, Martin Z-Man took sole second but it was the Englishman living in Texas, Ian Brimble, whose 40-pointer took top of the podium for the comp.
