Tuesday, Jan. 22 –Anniversary Tournament & Party

We were celebrating both the New Year and the 4th anniversary of the group, but organising these events is getting harder and harder each year.  Not only do you have to think of new ideas but Father Time is catching up and the strain takes its toll.  Nevertheless, this year’s event from the first players out till the end of the night was a huge success.

Because we had a full field of players and a couple more than expected, we were concerned that all would not finish their game in daylight.  However, with the co-operation of the Phoenix marshals all completed their 18 holes before dark.

The course was perfectly set up and it was Lake/Ocean course that was the challenge.  One has to say the fairways and greens are now in superb condition and if anyone can work out the tricky greens then they are sure to finish in the top places.

Back at the Relax Bar our hosts Dieter and Ung (along with all their staff) created a perfect setting for the rest of the evening.  The buffet was superb and there was plenty of food to cover minimum seconds and even thirds if required.

I have to thank all of the sponsors who made the event even more successful and who provided the lucky draw prizes.  They were: KPK Food Services Ltd., Joe Miller, Paul Taylor, Tratoria Italiana, Ann’s Salon, David Czernie, Il Primo Sole, Bob Neylon, Phoenix Golf Club, Goort Gelten, Mrs. Mukesh Thakker, Granville Swanton, Pierre Bietry & friends, The Relax Bar, and donations from our own group.

Before the awards ceremony we were treated to a superb cabaret from Elvis (supported by Caroline Etherington).

Onto the tournament winners of the day: A Flight winner with 39 points was Francis Goyons ahead of Stuart Gordon with 35 points in second on count back over Hugh Byrne in third, and in fourth was Sergio Poggi with 34 points.  Each was awarded with a suitable trophy.

Patrick Browne came first in B Flight winners with 39 points, nudging Goort Gelten into second place by way of count back, and third was Graham Ellis with 38, one ahead of fourth placed John Bartley.  These players were also awarded suitable trophies.

Near pin prizes went to Wolfram Kruger, Mike Gerrard, Pierre Bietry, Ulf Berggren, Sergio Volpi, Patrick Brown, Colin Gregg & Stephen Cooper Reade.  Each was given a sleeve of Taylor Made golf balls.

That all happened over two weeks ago and further to that we had our normal end of the month Trattoria Italiana voucher and I will only report the winner was Hugh Byrne with 38 points.

The high spot of this report is that on two holes Hugh recorded 5 (yes five) points on each hole, making 10 out of the 38.  On Mountain Hole 8 he managed to hole his tee shot, with a shot allowance which gave him a net 0 for 5 points.  Needless to say he also won the near pin prize for that hole.

He then went on to eagle Ocean 2 with a shot allowance which reduced to a net 1 for 5 points.  What a great day for him and the rest of the group when he did the gentlemanly thing and bought everyone a drink.  Congratulations Hugh.  This cost will be offset by the fact that he was awarded the 500 baht Trattoria Italiana voucher for winning the day.

Finally I would like to thank all the players who attended and in particular those that assisted me to make the day a huge success.

Although we are predominantly a members group we do welcome non members of Phoenix as our guests and they enjoy the benefit of only having to pay 1,000 baht green fee during the high season.  The only basic requirements to join our group for golf are that you must have an official handicap of no more than 28 and be male.  Anyone interested please call me (Mike) on 087 091 7565.  We play every Tuesday, Friday & Sunday at approx 11.30 am.
