Division 2 (15–22)

Division (23+)

2nd Brian Lewis (23) 31pts

3rd Steven Howard (32) 31pts

Even after a few contenders dropped out, believing that the course would be too difficult a test as a singles completion, there were still enough players to require three divisions.  In the event, the scores returned were such that the CSS for the day rose just one to 73 as at least the first division front runners and the second division winner scored reasonably well.

Phil Mitchell, making a long delayed return to the group, did just sufficient in a count back, which he won with a better 18 to 17, to take the win in the first division ahead of the in-form Alan Hanlon, still running hot after the Championships.  Both were four ahead of third placed Graham Johnson, also returning to the group and completely oblivious to the course’s reputation.

The second division was led in by Philip Cass, just on the standard and two ahead of Ron Rigden who needed to win a three-way count back, which he did, with 20 points on the back nine to leave Mike Korney in third with 14 and Club Net Champion John Carlin fourth with just 12 after a he had started strongly.

The third division was taken by H.E. Patrick Scullion, also just at the standard and three in front of Brian Lewis in second after the latter had also won a count back on the last six over playing partner Steven Howard, who had to settle for third.

Alan Hanlon scored the only 2 in the first division to sweep the pool whilst John Carlin, Joey Cline and Ron Rigden shared the second division pot.

CSS 72

Division 1 (0–17)

1st Russell Exley (9) 40pts

2nd Jon Yarrow (11) 38pts

3rd Jon Batty (7) 37pts

4th Alan Hanlon (12) 35pts

Division 2 (18+)

1st Ed Garner (18) 36pts

2nd Brendan Dunne (29) 36pts

3rd Don Everett (18) 34pts

4th Danny Greer (23) 33pts

With the lowest turnout of the week, which could only be attributed to the cost of the day, Russell Exley took the first division honours with his best round since 2011.  That left him two clear of the always dangerous Jon Yarrow while Jon Batty ran a close third just one behind his namesake, with Alan Hanlon again showing up well in fourth.

The second division was claimed by Ed Garner in his first round at the course as he finished well and followed a level handicap front nine with another to win a count back over Brendan Dunne, scoring a better 18 to 17.  Don Everett took third and Danny Greer fourth with just one point separating them.

There were no 2’s in the second division but the first division pool was shared between Russell Goldsworthy and Jon Yarrow.

Friday, Feb. 13, Crystal Bay A & C – Stableford

CSS 72

Division 1 (0–17)

1st Phil Cass (17) 43pts

2nd Kevin Blake (9) 37pts

3rd Mark Williams (7) 36pts

4th Dave Hester (7) 36pts

5th Peter Skinner (11) 36pts

Division 2 (18+)

1st Hal Hart (20) 36pts

2nd Terry Hodgkiss (24) 35pts

3rd Mike Korney (19) 34pts

4th Markku Tynell (22) 33pts

5th Vincent Gras (18) 33pts

Friday the thirteenth held no fears for Phil Cass, the winner of the first division, as he strode to the top of the week’s scoring list with a seven under card that spread-eagled the field and left his nearest challenger six shots adrift, also ensuring he will be playing from a three shot lesser handicap next week.

Kevin Blake made a move towards a return to form as he took second spot, one ahead of a three-way count back that Mark Williams won with 18, leaving David Hester in fourth and Peter Skinner fifth after they had scored 12 and 10 respectively over the last six.

The second division was won by Hal Hart with a solid level handicap round which was just enough to consign Terry Hodgkiss into second place as he, in turn, ended one up on Mike Korney in third.

Another stroke behind, Markku Tynell won a three-way count back between Vincent Gras, in fifth, and John Carlin sixth.

Phil Cass added to his day’s haul when he slipped in the only 2 in the second division to claim the rollover pot whilst the first division was shared between Dave Hester and Peter Skinner, with two shares, for one on each of the nines.
