The Billabong Bar Golf Society
Monday, Nov. 25, The Emerald – Stableford
The Emerald from the white tees was the test on Monday and we got away about 30 minutes earlier than our allotted time. The course was in beautiful condition and was a pleasure to play with the greens great to putt on.
Taking first place and losing a shot from her handicap was Eng Duangwaw with a magic 40 points, just edging Owen Walkley into second on count back. Third place went to Ralph Hymer some 7 points in arrears of the top two and his handicap went back to 19; just goes to show you can’t be in the money all the time without the handicapper getting hold of you. In fourth spot was Phonsie McGahan with 32 points and fifth was taken by Wayne Cotterell.
Wednesday, Nov. 27, Green Valley – Stableford
We moved to Green Valley on Wednesday and even though it rained hard overnight the course was in great condition and the greens were lightening fast. As carts were allowed on the fairways we didn’t play winter rules but in some places it could have been justified.
The Courtyard Cavaliers (from left): Jeff North, Geoff Couch, Graham Beaumont and Helmut.
It was John Player’s birthday this day so there were four 500 baht vouchers up for grabs on the par three’s. It is amazing how close you can get when you have something like these to aim for, I think the furthest one away from the flag would have been two feet.
There was some great scoring today with a count back on 35 points deciding 6th and 7th positions with Murray Hart missing out to Chaten Patel, who scored 19 points on the back stretch. Fifth place went to Bob Finley with 36 points, fourth to Martin Kingswood on 37 and third to Ted Gardner, also 37, but with a more favourable inward nine. In second place was Bob Newell with 39 points and he bogied the last two holes otherwise he would have beaten his good mate Jim Bell who came first with 40 points.
There were ten ‘2’s coming from Owen Walkley, Auke, Ralph Hymer, Barry Lewis, John Locke, Sel Wegner, Brian Maddox, Paul Bourke, Wayne Cotterell and Bob Philp.
The near pin vouchers went to Bob Philp on the fourth, Murray Hart on nine, Owen Walkley on twelve, and Brian Maddox on sixteen,
Friday, Nov. 29, Plutaluang – Stableford
Today was our regular scramble at the Navy course playing West and North, with the field split into eleven groups. We were off to an early start and with no hold-ups it was just good flowing golf.
Birthday boy John Player.
Our good friend Darl White came out for the day, even though he couldn’t play he just wanted to enjoy the fresh air and was escorted by Chris Marsden in a golf cart, with liquid refreshments of course.
The weather was perfect with a good breeze all day. There was the usual banter on the tee about which was the team to beat etc. etc. and the defending champions came to the fore again, but this time only by a small margin.
The team from the Players Lounge, consisting of Bob Newell, Jim Bell, Gareth Gill and Simon Philbrook took third place with a net 60.6. In second was the team from the Billabong Bar consisting of JJ Harney, Lamun Hanley, Bill Marsden and Bob Philp with a score of 60.4. , Taking line honours today were the boys from the Courtyard, calling themselves the Cavaliers with a net score of 60.1. All in all a great day out with lots of laughs and tales of the ones that got away.
